The Eltville Electoral Castle, a landmark of the city of Eltville am Rhein, is a town castle in the Rheingau-Taunus district. Its history is marked by destruction and reconstruction, with the residential tower having survived to this day.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1301, when an older tower castle on the same site was destroyed during the Customs War. In the course of the double occupation of the Archbishopric of Mainz in 1328, when Baldwin of Luxembourg was elected Archbishop of Mainz, Eltville became the bishop's residence. Under his aegis, the new construction of the castle began in 1330 and was completed in 1345. Further expansions followed until 1419, including additions to the residential tower.
