Kurfürst Palace Amberg

As the castle complex on the Vils no longer met the demands of the Electors at the beginning of the 15th century, Elector Ludwig III (1410-1436) began constructing a new castle in 1417. The complex, which was expanded into a fortress under Elector Friedrich I, gained the status of a residence due to the regency of a governor and the associated court. In 1474, on the occasion of the "Amberg Wedding," the later "great Kemenate," today's main building of the castle, was erected parallel to the already existing structure. In this, Governor Ludwig Graf von Holnstein (1723-1780) established his residence. In 1768, he had the "front Kemenate," the oldest part of the castle, demolished to create a Baroque garden. The castle last served as a residence when Elector Max IV Joseph, the later King, came to Amberg in 1800 while fleeing from French troops. Today, the complex serves as an administrative building for the Amberg-Sulzbach district office.

The east and north wings of the arsenal were built under Elector Philipp around 1502. An electoral armorer can be traced for the first time in 1512. The construction of the south wing, which was completed in 1607, took place under the governorship of Prince Christian of Anhalt and with the participation of the Palatine master builder Johann Schoch. The arsenal lost its actual function as early as 1743, and it was finally dissolved in 1778. Different uses in the subsequent period also brought about changes to the building. The most serious of these were the installations of stables for the cavalry horses. In 1945, it was severely damaged by a major fire. Since 1989, it has served the Amberg-Sulzbach district as an administrative building, and its comprehensive renovation was completed in 1994.
