Kurmainzer Amtshof Manor
The Kurmainzer Amtshof in Heppenheim an der Bergstraße is a manor and estate house with late Gothic architecture. It is situated below the Starkenburg castle.
History+
Construction of the Kurmainzer Amtshof began in the late 14th century, taking on a pentagonal shape built from quarry stone and half-timbering, which gave it a defensive character. It belonged to the Upper Archdiocese of the Electorate of Mainz. After the Thirty Years' War, the complex was abandoned as an administrative court and was restored in a simplified form in 1693. In December 1948, delegates from liberal party groups founded the FDP here and elected Theodor Heuss as its first party chairman. A bronze plaque commemorates this event.
