Landgräfliches Castle (Grünberg)
The History of the Castle+
The castle emerged from the Antonite Monastery, founded in 1095. In 1577, a renovation took place, which still contains many structural remains from the monastic period.
From Monastery to Castle+
The Antonite Monastery, dedicated to Saint Anthony, was founded in 1095 and quickly gained importance in the region. Over the centuries, it developed into a spiritual and economic center. The monastery complex included not only the church and living quarters for the monks but also extensive agricultural areas and workshops.
After the Reformation, the monastery was secularized in the mid-16th century. The property fell to the local ruler, who decided to convert the former monastery into a residential castle. This conversion, which began in 1577, marked a significant turning point in the building's history.
Architectural Features+
During the 1577 renovation, great care was taken to preserve existing structures. Thus, many elements from the monastic period are still visible today. These include parts of the cloister, the former chapter house, and sections of the monastery wall. These historical traces give the castle its unique character and bear witness to its long and varied history.
The castle combines elements of medieval monastic architecture with Renaissance stylistic features. The former monastery church was integrated into the new building complex and now serves as the castle chapel. The former refectory was converted into a magnificent banqueting hall. Despite all the changes, the spiritual atmosphere of the former monastery is still palpable in many places.
