The Fortress can be visited

Lappeenranta Fortress, a prominent historical structure, stands in the city of Lappeenranta in South Karelia, Finland. Its history is closely intertwined with the conflicts between Sweden and Russia, making it a significant testament to past eras.

History+

In 1721, during the Russian occupation period, also known as the "Great Wrath," the Swedes began constructing the fortress in Lappeenranta. However, its defensive capabilities proved insufficient, as Russian troops conquered the city within just five hours in 1741. Shortly thereafter, Lappeenranta became part of the Russian Empire, almost a century before other regions of Finland. It was not until 1811 that the so-called "Old Finland," which included Lappeenranta, was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Finland, established in 1809. This ended the region's role as a battlefield and ushered in an era of tranquility in the lake landscape.
