History+

The origins of Lartington Hall trace back to 1635, when the oldest part of the house was built for the Appleby family. In 1654, ownership of the estate transferred to the von Maire family. Through a marriage between Sir Henry Lawson and Anna Anastasia Maire, Lartington Hall later came into the possession of the Lawson family. The couple's grandson, Henry Thomas Maire, inherited the estate and married Eliza Witham, subsequently changing his surname to Witham. Henry Witham served as High Sheriff of Durham in 1844.
