Layer Marney Tower

To be privately owned

Layer Marney Tower in Essex, England, is a Tudor castle known for its unfinished appearance.

History+

Construction of Layer Marney Tower began around 1520 under Henry, the 1st Lord Marney, during the early reign of Henry VIII. Following his death in 1523, his son John continued the building work. However, he too passed away just two years later, and as the male line of the family ended with him, the construction project could not be completed. In 1884, the castle suffered significant damage from a major earthquake. Later, Alfred and Kezia Peache undertook the restoration of the estate.
