Lenzburg Castle
Lenzburg Castle, one of Switzerland's most significant hilltop castles, majestically overlooks the old town of Lenzburg in the canton of Aargau. Situated on a prominent, almost circular molasse hill, the complex rises about a hundred meters above the surrounding plain, offering an impressive sight. Its history dates back to the 11th century when it served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Lenzburg.
History+
The earliest traces of settlement on the castle hill date back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by a Neolithic burial ground and Roman and Alemannic finds. The first documented mention of a castle dates to 1077, when Ulrich of Lenzburg held papal legates captive. After the extinction of the Counts of Lenzburg in 1173, the inheritance passed to Emperor Barbarossa. Later, the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs via the Staufer and Kyburg families. From 1444, Lenzburg served as the seat of the Bernese bailiffs for over 350 years. In 1956, the Canton of Aargau acquired the castle from the widow of polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth. Since 1987, it has housed the Historical Museum of the Canton of Aargau.
