St. Leonhard

Branch church, Parish church

The Leonhardskirche in Frankfurt am Main, a significant cultural monument in Hesse, combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. As one of the few endowed churches in Frankfurt, it remained largely undamaged during World War II. It now serves as a subsidiary church of the Cathedral parish and is also the parish church for the English-speaking Catholic community.

History+

The foundation stone for the Leonhardskirche was laid in 1219, after King Frederick II donated the land. Originally built as a late Romanesque basilica, the edifice later underwent Gothic alterations. The church was an important stop on the historic Way of St. James and the pilgrimage route to Jerusalem, as evidenced by the Romanesque tympanum of the pilgrim's gate from 1220. In 1317, a collegiate chapter was established, which managed the church as a collegiate church.

Location+

The edifice is situated in the Old Town of Frankfurt am Main, on the northern bank of the Main River. Its geographical elevation is approximately 101 meters above sea level.

On site+

The Leonhardskirche is dedicated to Saint Leonard of Limoges. Its preserved late Romanesque sections are among the oldest church building components in Frankfurt. Today, it is an active church within the Diocese of Limburg and a protected cultural monument.
