Limburg Castle

As early as 500 BC, a Celtic settlement existed on the Domberg. By 800 AD at the latest, during the Merovingian period, a castle complex was built here to secure a Lahn crossing. In the 9th century, count palatines resided here, and in the 10th century, the complex came into the possession of the Konradiner, who founded St. George's Collegiate Church in 910. Until the 13th century, the castle also served as a residence for the canons of the collegiate church. From the 13th century, the eastern part developed into a castle-like residence for the Lords of Limburg, while the remaining area housed burgmannen. After the extinction of the Konradiner, the castle changed hands several times, including the House of Isenburg and Kurtrier, which enfeoffed it to various noble families.
