On the island of Lindisfarne off the northeast coast of England stands Lindisfarne Priory, a historic monastery. This site, once a center of Celtic monastic culture, is now a ruin.

History+

The monastery was founded in 635 by Scottish monks led by St. Aidan. Later, St. Cuthbert took over and became the first Bishop of Lindisfarne. After his death around 715-721, the Lindisfarne Gospels were created here, making the monastery a pilgrimage site. It developed into a center for faith, art, and scholarship, known for its scriptorium and its role in the Christianization of England. A pivotal event was the Viking raid on June 8, 793, often considered the beginning of the Viking Age.
