History+
The history of Longleat House began in 1540 when John Thynne, an adjutant to the 1st Duke of Somerset, acquired a dissolved Augustinian monastery. Between 1568 and 1580, he had the current manor house built according to plans by Robert Smythson. In 1949, Longleat House opened its doors to the public as the first manor house in Great Britain. Another special feature is the safari park, which opened in 1966, the first of its kind outside Africa.
