Loschwitzer Church

Loschwitz was first documented in 1315. In the 14th century, the lands were under the administration of the Maternihospital in Dresden. As Loschwitz belonged to the parish of the distant Frauenkirche, attending church was often arduous for residents. After the Thirty Years' War and an economic boom in Saxony, church services at the Frauenkirche became overcrowded due to increasing population. In December 1702, Loschwitz and Wachwitz requested to be separated from the Frauenkirche parish, which was granted by Augustus the Strong in 1704. Construction of the Loschwitz Church, designed by George Bähr and executed by Johann Christian Fehre, began in April 1705 on the Materni-Weinberg. The foundation stone was laid on June 29, 1705. During the Great Northern War, construction was interrupted in 1706, but work resumed after an intervention with Charles XII. On August 3, 1708, the octagonal Baroque hall church was consecrated. At the end of the 19th century, the church underwent extensive renovation under the direction of Karl Emil Scherz, during which the interior was redesigned and the facade changed from old rose to grey. During the air raids on Dresden in February 1945, the church was severely damaged and burned down to its outer walls. Reconstruction only began after the reunification of Germany, funded by donations and with a symbolic laying of the foundation stone on June 29, 1991. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 3, 1992, with the exterior design mirroring the original building from 1708.
