The origins of Lough Rynn Castle date back approximately 200 years. The current castle building was constructed in 1833 according to the designs of Robert Clements. Influential was the era of the 3rd Lord of Leitrim, William Sydney Clements, who sought to transform the estate into a model enterprise. He initiated construction projects, expanded land ownership, and advocated for a ban on slash-and-burn farming. One of his reforms was the abolition of a traditional land-use system, where families received proportional plots of land that became smaller over the years, eventually becoming insufficient to sustain the families.
