Ludus Magnus

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The Ludus Magnus, the largest gladiatorial school in ancient Rome, was a central training facility for gladiators. Built in a valley between the Esquiline and Caelian hills, it served as preparation for the fights in the nearby Colosseum.

History+

Emperor Domitian had the Ludus Magnus built between 81 and 96 AD. Later, under Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD), the complex was raised by about 1.5 meters. Thanks to ancient sources and fragments of the marble city plan, the Forma Urbis from the early 3rd century AD, its name and construction period are known.
