Schwaigfurt Castle

The small pleasure palace Schwaigfurt was built in 1777 by the abbots of Schussenried.

It served as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the abbots. The construction was commissioned by Abbot Wilhelm II, who wanted to create a representative retreat outside the monastery walls.

Architectural Features

Schwaigfurt Castle is a prime example of late Baroque architecture in Upper Swabia. The building features a symmetrical facade with elegant stucco decorations and a mansard roof.

After the secularization in 1803, the castle changed hands several times. It served as a private residence, a guesthouse, and even a school for a period.

Current Use

Today, Schwaigfurt Castle is privately owned and is used for cultural events and private celebrations. Parts of the park are accessible to the public during certain times of the year.

Extensive restoration work was carried out in the 1990s to preserve the historical substance of the building. The facade, the roof, and several interior rooms were carefully renovated.

These efforts ensured that Schwaigfurt Castle remains a significant cultural monument for future generations.
