Herrenstrunden Manor

The origins of the Malteser Komturei lie in the 13th century. As early as 1224, the knight Dietrich von Dorendorf transferred the church in Herkenrath to the Hospital of St. John in Jerusalem. A first mention of the Komturei is found in 1290, after an annuity had already been transferred to the Johanniter in Herrenstrunden in 1270. From 1328, the commandery functioned as an Order's Bailiwick and thus as a central administrative office for the Order's province. Around 1530, the Johanniter renamed themselves Malteser as a result of the Reformation. In the course of secularization, the order was dispossessed in 1806, and the property passed into private hands. The current appearance of the building dates from the early 17th century.
