Herrenstrunden Manor

The Malteser Komturei is an administrative seat of the Order of St. John, founded in the 13th century, located in the Herrenstrunden district of the city of Bergisch Gladbach.

In 1224, the knight Dietrich von Dorendorf (Dondorf near Hennef an der Sieg) transferred the church in Herkenrath to the Hospital of Saint John in Jerusalem. In 1270, a rent was transferred to the Johanniter in Herrenstrunden. The exact date of the founding of the Kommende Herrenstrunden is unknown. The Komturei is first mentioned in 1290. The Kommende, meaning the entire building complex of the lords on the Strunde, is mentioned in 1328 as an Order's Bailiwick and thus as a central office for the administration of the Order's province. In that year, Petrus von Ungula, Prior of Toulouse and General Visitor for Germany and France, at the chapter for the Priory of Germany in Trier, transferred the Kommende and Bailiwick Herrenstrunden to Heinrich von Selbach for 15 years. The Kommende retained this significance for several centuries. Around 1530, the Johanniter renamed themselves as Malteser as a result of the Reformation. In connection with the secularization, the Order was dispossessed in 1806 after the enactment of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. The confiscated property subsequently fell into private hands.
