In Vienna's 19th district, Döbling, is the Maria-Theresien-Schlössel, a Rococo pleasure palace. Originally built for Empress Maria Theresia, it now functions as an educational institution.

History+

The construction of the small palace took place in 1745 as a pleasure residence for the imperial regent Maria Theresia. In 1912, a transformation began by the Nathaniel Freiherr von Rothschild'sche Stiftung für Nervenkranke, which converted the building into a sanatorium with 66 beds. During World War I, from 1914, the Rothschild Foundation made the hospital available to the Imperial and Royal War Ministry, expanding its capacity to 200 beds. From 1915, it was operated by the Red Cross as a specialized hospital for military personnel with nerve injuries and illnesses. After the war, normal civilian operations resumed.
