Dormition Cathedral

The church can be visited

The Dormition Cathedral in Astrakhan is a prominent sacred building and the center of the local Kremlin. Its impressive appearance shapes the cityscape and makes it an important testament to Russian architecture.

History+

The origins of the cathedral date back to 1602, when an initial structure was built on this site. However, the church only acquired its current form between 1698 and 1710. The design for this new building came from the serf architect Dorofey Myakishev. Inside, the cathedral houses the tombs of Metropolitan Iosif, who was murdered by rebellious Cossacks in 1671, as well as the graves of two 18th-century Georgian rulers, Teimuraz II and Vakhtang VI.

Location+

The Dormition Cathedral is located in the city of Astrakhan, in the Astrakhan district of the Southern Russia region, on Russian territory. It stands at an elevation of approximately 4 meters above sea level.
