Marienburg Castle

The castle was constructed between 1346 and 1349 under the aegis of Bishop Heinrich III of Braunschweig-Lüneburg of Hildesheim, to assert his authority against the rebellious citizens of his episcopal city. During the Thirty Years' War, Marienburg suffered damage in 1632, particularly to the upper floors of the east and south wings, which were rebuilt in half-timbered style in 1663. After the war, the complex lost its strategic importance and was subsequently used primarily for residential purposes.
