A first documentary mention of an early Gothic predecessor church dates back to 1232. The construction of the current three-aisled basilica began around 1290 and was completed by the mid-15th century. Originally, a double-tower complex was planned but not realized. In 1419, the university was solemnly opened in St. Mary's Church, underscoring its close connection to Rostock's academic history. The Reformation was introduced in Rostock in 1531, and St. Mary's Church adapted its interior to the Protestant rite. During World War II, St. Mary's Church survived the heavy bombing raids of 1942 and 1944 relatively unscathed, while large parts of the old town were destroyed. During the upheaval of 1989, the church served as an important meeting point for opposition forces and the starting point for demonstrations against the SED regime.
