Old Castle Emmendingen

Originally constructed as a court for Tennenbach Monastery, as still indicated by the abbot's staff above the portal, the building underwent several changes of ownership. In 1588, Margrave Jakob III of Baden-Hachberg acquired the property and had it converted into a residential castle. Two years later, in 1590, the “Emmendingen Religious Colloquy” took place in the adjacent chapter house. After the Margrave's death, the castle served as the official residence for district governors and later as a bailiwick.
