Martinskloster Erfurt

The nunnery Mariengarten was founded in 1288 within the city walls of Erfurt, settled by sisters from Berka Abbey. Between 1303 and 1309, the convent was relocated to a new site outside the city wall, near St. Martini im Brühl church, after which it became known as Martinskloster. The original cloister building, a two-story four-wing structure around a square courtyard, is of Gothic origin, as is the associated church. It underwent extensive renovation between 1726 and 1736, from which a Baroque sandstone sculpture of Mary with Child on the southeast corner also dates. After being taken over by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1802/1803, the monastery was secularized in 1818/1819. The assets were used for ecclesiastical purposes in the region. The Cistercian nuns had to leave the monastery. From 1819, the former cloister building was converted into a Prussian barracks, the Martinskaserne, which was later expanded by a new building in the monastery garden. After 1918, the monastery buildings were converted for residential use and around 2004 into residential houses, while the Martinskaserne was demolished.

The Martinskloster is located in the eastern part of the Brühlervorstadt district of the city of Erfurt in the federal state of Thuringia, Germany.

The former monastery buildings are now used as residential homes, having been converted accordingly around the year 2004.
