Minoritenkloster Brilon

The Minorite Monastery in Brilon was founded in 1653, after the Conventual Franciscans of the Cologne ecclesiastical province offered their services to the Brilon magistrate. Initially, they focused on providing grammar school education and were granted the Nikolaikapelle along with permission to acquire an adjacent house. The Archbishop of Cologne, Max Heinrich of Bavaria, approved the establishment in September 1653. From 1655, the “Ambrosio-Antonium” grammar school was established, which at times educated up to 80 students. The city of Brilon constructed its own school building between 1708 and 1712. In addition to their teaching duties, the Minorites took over the parish administration in Obermarsberg from 1756 and in Brilon from 1786. The foundation stone for the monastery building was laid in 1663, but its completion was not until 1703. A new monastery church was built between 1772 and 1782, partly financed by Brilon's mayor Johann Melchior Wichartz. As a result of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803.

Today, the former Minorite Monastery in Brilon is protected as an architectural monument in North Rhine-Westphalia. A portion of the former monastery library is preserved in the library of the Gymnasium Petrinum Brilon.
