Minoritenkloster Köln

Monastery (active), Parish church

The Minorite Monastery in Cologne is a significant historical sacred building in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was founded in 1229 and is closely associated with the Order of Friars Minor, the Franciscan Minorites. The accompanying monastery church, the Minoritenkirche, has been preserved to this day and bears witness to the monastery's long history.

History+

The Franciscans arrived in Cologne as early as 1222 and were welcomed by Archbishop Engelbert I. In 1229, Gerhard Quatermarkt donated land for an oratory and accommodation in the south of Cologne. From the outset, the friars were active in pastoral care and nursing. The monastery quickly became the main monastery of the Lower German Franciscan Province. To find a more central location, the friars acquired new land near Cologne Cathedral in 1244. Construction of the current monastery church and the adjacent monastery to the north began in 1247 or 1248. The church was consecrated to the Holy Cross in 1260. From 1260, the monastery housed a general study of philosophy and theology, where Johannes Duns Scotus later taught. With the founding of the University of Cologne in 1388, this general study was incorporated into it, and numerous Minorites served as professors. In 1517, the monastery joined the branch of the Conventuals. The monastery was dissolved in 1802, but a new one was established near the Minoritenkirche in 1929.
