Mittelweiher Castle
Mittelweiherburg is a moated castle built around 1570 in the market town of Hard in Vorarlberg.
The moated castle was built around 1570 in the spring area of the Harder village stream. The pond surrounding the small castle has not been preserved.
After many changes of ownership (including the Deuring family, Weingarten Monastery), it has been the cradle of the Vorarlberg textile industry since 1794. A fabric printing factory was established there by the manufacturer Samuel Vogel from Alsace. In 1838, the building was acquired by the Swiss manufacturer Melchior Jenny for the company Jenny & Schindler. Subsequently, the fabric printing factory was continued by Samuel Schindler after 1867.
Current Use
Between 1957 and 1962, a first renovation took place and a local history museum was established. Since 1997, Mittelweiherburg has housed a textile printing museum focusing on block printing, textile hand printing, and the social history of industrialization up to the 1930s.
