Basilica of St. Vitus, Mönchengladbach

The origins of the Minster date back to 974, when Archbishop Gero of Cologne founded a Benedictine abbey on the Gladbach hill. He placed the monastery under the protection of the Holy Spirit, the Mother of God Mary, and the martyr Vitus. The Trier monk Sandrad, a renowned reformer of his time, was appointed as the first abbot. The foundation occurred during a period of monastic revival, influenced by reform movements from Gorze and Cluny. An old manuscript, the “Fundatio” from around 1090, reports on an earlier church building by Balderich and its destruction by the Hungarians, during which relics were saved. A legend tells of a revelation to Gero, leading him to found a monastery for Saint Vitus on a wooded hill, where angelic singing and the discovery of relics were interpreted as a divine sign. Until 1802, the Minster was the abbey church of the Benedictines. In 1974, on the occasion of the 84th German Katholikentag and the 1000th anniversary of the abbey's founding, Pope Paul VI elevated the church to a papal Basilica minor.
