Müggenburg, also known as Müggenburg Castle, is a historic moated castle in the eponymous district of the municipality of Neuenkirchen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It combines a medieval tower with a Neo-Gothic castle building from the late 19th century.

History+

The first documented mention of Müggenburg as “castro Mügghenborg” dates to 1355. At that time, the moated castle served as the ancestral seat of the Pomeranian noble family of Nienkerken. In 1434, the complex suffered damage during conflicts with the city of Anklam, with only the 28-meter-high Fangelturm remaining. Around this tower, the current Neo-Gothic castle was built between 1889 and 1891. Until its expropriation in 1945, the estate was owned by the Holtz family.
