Mühl Castle

To be privately owned

The Mühl-Schlössl is a small castle on the edge of Graz's Volksgarten in the fourth district of Lend. Immediately nearby is the Protestant Kreuzkirche, for which the small castle was adapted as a rectory in 1910.

The Protestant regional physician, Baron Christoph von Gabelhofen, commissioned the construction of the small baroque castle building in 1560. After a renovation at the end of the 17th century, a comprehensive redesign took place in 1889. The Mühl-Schlössl suffered severe damage during a bombing raid on April 2, 1945, an Easter Monday. A fundamental restoration was completed in 1955.

Architecture and Design+

The two-story building with a hook-shaped floor plan has a half-hipped roof and a late-historicist facade design. Polygonal bay windows have been attached to the west wing since 1889. The column arcades on the ground floor partly date back to the 17th century. The rest was also added in 1889. A single-story chapel tower is crowned by a dome and an octagonal lantern. At the northwest corner of the building, there is a balcony on columns with a balustrade. The figural door decoration made of stucco dates from 1889.

On the first floor of the Mühl-Schlössl is the former house chapel, which was dedicated to Saint Paul the Hermit. The originally small room was subsequently enlarged. Its stucco ceiling and door leaves date from the 17th century. The former altar with the altarpiece was created around 1700. The altarpiece depicting the chapel's patron saint is located in the presbytery's meeting room. On the occasion of its adaptation into a Protestant rectory, a wing was added to the southwest side in 1910. On the upper floor of the northeast wing, a stucco ceiling with foliage and strapwork decorations from 1710/20 has been preserved.
