Minster St. Johannes

A predecessor to the current Münster St. Johannes was consecrated as early as 1190, with its remains presumed to lie beneath the present church. Construction of the current Gothic hall church likely began around 1404, even before the reign of Count Palatine Johann, who resided in Neumarkt from 1410 to 1443. It is believed that the Count Palatine significantly supported the construction. Completion probably occurred around 1432. Dendrochronological studies of the roof truss beams suggest the trees were felled in the winter of 1406/1407. In 2015, the church was elevated to the status of a minster. Extensive destruction during World War II necessitated reconstruction, which is reflected in the varying types of sandstone used.

Münster St. Johannes is centrally located in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, a town in Bavaria, Germany. It stands on a relatively small church square, surrounded by the rectory, Hallertorstraße, Grünbaumwirtsgasse, and the town hall.

Today, Münster St. Johannes serves as the Catholic parish church of the Neumarkt deanery within the Diocese of Eichstätt. Its 72-meter-high tower is the tallest church spire in the Diocese of Eichstätt and defines the townscape. The church remains an active place of worship and a protected architectural monument.
