Kanonissenstift Lindau

The origins of the Minster date back to the year 810. For over a millennium, it served as the church of the Lindau Canonesses' Collegiate Foundation. Following a devastating city fire in 1728, the current church was erected between 1748 and 1752. The renowned Baroque master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato, known for his works on Mainau Island and in Meersburg, was responsible for the design. The widowed Princess-Abbess Therese Wilhelmine von Pollheim-Winkelhausen financed the construction with her entire fortune, and her coat of arms adorns the chancel arch. Another major fire in 1922 led to the collapse of the roof and ceiling of the nave, destroying the ceiling frescoes by Giuseppe Appiani from 1749. Waldemar Kolmsperger the Elder was commissioned in 1925 to restore the Baroque ceiling design. In 1987, a large part of the nave ceiling, including frescoes, collapsed again, causing significant damage to pews and the organ. After five years of restoration work, the church was reopened in 1992 and reconsecrated in 1993 by Bishop Viktor Josef Dammertz. The ceiling frescoes were restored by Josef Lorch. In 2002, Bishop Dammertz elevated the collegiate church to the status of a minster.

The Minster of Our Lady is located in Lindau, a city in the Bavarian part of Germany, picturesquely situated on Lake Constance. The church stands on Lindau Island in the eastern area of the market square.

Today, the Minster of Our Lady serves as the Roman Catholic parish church and is an active place of worship and culture. It houses two organs, the large organ in the west gallery and the Marien organ in the north side gallery. Bavarian Radio has recorded and broadcast concerts here. The interior of the church is richly adorned with Rococo stucco, frescoes, and carvings, including the ceiling painting of the Assumption of Mary and the altarpiece of the Adoration of the Magi.
