History+

The origins of Necarne Castle date back to the Plantation of Ulster in 1610. Edward Warde was the first 'undertaker' to receive the land around Irvinestown in 1611. His task was to build a house and a bawn, settle British tenants, and maintain armed men. The area was then known as Nakarney or Nakarna. After several changes of ownership, the estate came into the possession of Gerard Lowther in 1615.
