Archduke Ferdinand II had the castle built in 1596-1600 (planned as a widow's residence for his mother, but she did not move into it). In 1677-79 the castle was rebuilt by Franz Peter Carlone and Hans Pozzo; damaged by fires (1670 and 1709) and an earthquake (1690). In 1956, the former New Castle was restored and is now the seat of the Judenburg district administration.
