New Residence Bamberg

The construction of the New Residence took place in two phases. Under Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Gebsattel, the rear, two-winged section in Renaissance style was built starting in 1602. Between 1697 and 1703, the front, Baroque section was completed under Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, with Leonhard Dientzenhofer playing a significant role. After 1803, the residence served as a royal abode. On June 1, 1815, Marshal Louis-Alexandre Berthier, a follower of Napoleon, died after falling from a window. Later, from 1862 to 1875, the New Residence was the exile for the deposed Greek royal couple Otto I and Amalie. In 1919, the elected Bavarian government under Prime Minister Hoffmann briefly sought refuge here when the state parliament was moved to Bamberg.
