New Cathedral Linz

The church can be visited

The Mariendom in Linz, also known as the New Cathedral, is Austria's largest church building by capacity. This Neo-Gothic structure shapes the cityscape of Linz in Upper Austria.

History+

The initiative for the construction of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception came from Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier in 1855, as an expression of gratitude for the papal bull “Ineffabilis Deus” from the previous year. The foundation stone was laid in 1862. The church was consecrated by Bishop Johannes Maria Gföllner on May 1, 1924.
