New Palace Potsdam

University of Potsdam

In the western part of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, the New Palace marks the culmination of Prussian Baroque architecture. Originally conceived as a guesthouse, it later served as an imperial residence and today houses parts of the University of Potsdam.

History+

Construction of the New Palace began in 1763 under Frederick the Great after the end of the Seven Years' War and was completed by 1769. It was not intended as a royal residence but rather to demonstrate Prussia's supremacy and accommodate court guests.
