New Castle
The New Palace in Hechingen in the Zollernalb district (Baden-Württemberg) served as the city residence of the Princes of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and was built between 1818 and 1819 under Prince Friedrich Hermann Otto.
The predecessor building dated from the Renaissance and was built under Count Eitel Friedrich IV. This first large city palace was built at the end of the 16th century. Except for minor remnants, it had to make way for the current building at the beginning of the 19th century. The construction work was financed by reparations payments from France after the Congress of Vienna.
The New Palace is one of the main Neoclassical works in Hechingen and was built by Rudolf Burnitz from 1818 to 1819 as a three-wing complex. Burnitz was a student of Friedrich Weinbrenner, who was considered the leading architect of Neoclassicism in the Grand Duchy of Baden. Burnitz used parts of the predecessor building for the New Palace. However, because money ran out in the over-indebted principality, the palace remained unfinished. It was also never truly inhabited by the princely family. Today, the building is used by Sparkasse Zollernalb.
Design+
The complex has three wings. The central risalit is gabled and significantly higher than the side risalits. Ionic pilasters adorn the building. The interior was not completed.
The attic was supposed to receive another floor, which, however, did not happen due to a lack of funds. Later, Prince Konstantin had a provisional concert hall set up behind the facade.
Surroundings+
South of the New Palace, remnants of the former stables are still preserved. On the square opposite is the so-called Old Palace, which formerly served as a princess's palace and chancellery. Temporarily, the building also served as the residence of the prince. It is a plastered half-timbered building from the 18th century with a small Neoclassical gable triangle. Today, it houses the Hohenzollerisches Landesmuseum.
