Neues Castle (Bad Lobenstein)

After the Old Castle in Lobenstein's town center was severely damaged by a fire in 1714, the Princes of Reuß-Lobenstein, who had resided there since 1647, decided to construct a new residence. Between 1714 and 1718, under Heinrich XV. of Reuß-Lobenstein, the New Castle was erected in the Baroque style outside the then-city walls. It served as a princely residence until 1824, when the Lobenstein line of the Reuß family died out, and the territory passed to Reuß-Ebersdorf. The castle was affected by town fires in 1732, 1800, and 1862, but was always rebuilt and slightly altered in the process.
