New Castle (Bümpliz)

After the death of its builder Daniel Tschiffely, both castles passed to his son-in-law Karl Stürler. When Stürler died in Venlo in 1777, the properties were sold to Abraham Samuel Lombach. Just one year later, Lombach also passed away, and in 1783, through his widow's second marriage, the castles came into the possession of Johann Rudolf von Graffenried. After the decline of Old Bern, he sold the New Castle in 1799 to the businessman Gottlieb Haag, who later also acquired the Old Castle. In 1825, Ludwig Friedrich von Steiger bought the castles, followed by Franz Karl von Tavel in 1837, and Johann Friedrich Albrecht Tribolet in 1839, who established an institution for the mentally ill there.
