The New Castle in Gießen, built in the 16th century, combines architectural elements of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is an example of the transitional phase between these eras and one of Hesse's most important half-timbered buildings.

History+

The construction of the New Castle took place between 1533 and 1539 under Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous. Originally conceived as a palas hall building, it already exhibited features of a Renaissance castle. After 1650, the building served as the seat of the university chancellery and a court. A restoration was carried out between 1899 and 1907.
