New Castle Gräfentonna

In 1677, Duke Friedrich I laid the foundation stone for the new castle on the market square. It was built on the site of an outbuilding for the Fohlenhof. With a width of 12 m, it had a remarkable length of 84 m and was three stories high. Each floor had 30 windows on the long side and three on the gable end. Today, the municipal administration is housed here.

The Fohlenhof was a ducal stud farm, first mentioned in a document in 1573. It was located on the market square, where the castle stands today. The Fohlenhof was dissolved in 1732.

The castle served as a residence for the dukes of Württemberg-Neuenstadt until 1732. After the death of the last duke, Karl Friedrich, the line died out, and the castle became the property of the main Württemberg line.

From 1732, the castle was used as an administrative building. It housed various offices, including the district office and the tax office. In 1806, the castle became the seat of the newly established district court.

Today, the castle houses the administration of the Verbandsgemeinde. It is also used for cultural events and exhibitions. The castle is a listed building and is considered one of the most important historical buildings in the city.
