The New Castle in Ingolstadt is one of Bavaria's Gothic secular buildings. Constructed in the 15th century, it served as a residence for Duke Ludwig VII of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. The complex is characterized by its construction and the integration of a former city gate, making it a unique example of a city castle.

History+

Duke Ludwig VII, who spent a long time in France, commissioned the construction of the New Castle from 1418, inspired by French models. Designed as a city castle on the eastern edge of the city wall with a wide moat, it offered protection both externally and internally. A special feature was the integration of the Feldkirchner Gate, one of the four original city gates, into the castle complex. Later, at the end of the 15th century, the Landshut Dukes extended the castle with additional buildings such as the governor's residence and a granary.
