New Castle Kißlegg

On the site of the current castle, a building from 1523 already existed in the 16th century. This was replaced between 1687 and 1691 by a three-story half-timbered structure, which served, among other things, as a widow's residence for Countess Maria Monika von Waldburg-Trauchburg. After the old castle was destroyed by fire in 1704, Johann Ernst II. von Waldburg-Trauchburg began construction of the present castle in 1721. Completion took place in 1727 under the direction of Johann Georg Fischer from Füssen, with some materials from Alt-Trauchburg Castle being reused. Until 1941, the castle was owned by the Waldburg-Zeil family. After World War II, it served as a district hospital from 1945 to 1958, before being acquired by the municipality of Kißlegg in 1960 and converted into a school building. It housed a secondary school until 1978 and then a school for children with learning disabilities until 1984. From 1984 to 1992, the Baden-Württemberg Wind Music Association used the castle as a training center and museum. Since 1993, it has housed various cultural institutions, including an art museum and the Rudolf Wachter Museum. Today, it serves as the seat of the Bürgerstube with a local history museum and the citizen and tourist office of the town of Kißlegg.
