New Castle Lautrach

In 1781, the Prince-Abbot of Kempten, Honorius Roth von Schreckenstein, began the construction of Lautrach Castle, which was completed after three years and replaced an older, burned-down castle. After secularization, the castle became the property of Bavaria in 1803, before being auctioned off in 1805 to the French Count Firmas-Perier. He furnished the castle with a small theater hall adorned with hand-printed pictorial wallpapers from the Dufour manufactory in Paris. After the count's death, Baron von Speth acquired the estate in 1831. Only a few years later, in 1838, the Catholic priest Josef Deybach, with the support of Baron Vequel of Kronburg, bought both castles and founded an educational institution for noble daughters there, which was later expanded to include a boys' institute and gained regional renown. In 1889, the Wagnersche Anstalten of Dillingen took over the inheritance.
