New Castle Meersburg

The New Palace Meersburg, a residence, stands high above Lake Constance in Meersburg. It once served as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Constance and now functions as a museum with its Baroque architecture.
History+
Construction of the New Palace began in 1710 under Bishop Johann Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg, with master builder Chr. Gessinger. By 1712, the shell of the building was completed. Initially, the building was used as a chancellery, and a grand staircase was missing. It was not until 1740, under Cardinal Damian Hugo von Schönborn, that the palace was adapted to the requirements of a princely residence. Master builder Johann Georg Stahl from Bruchsal added a staircase according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. Between 1741 and 1743, the palace chapel was built, also based on Neumann's designs, with frescoes by Gottfried Bernhard Göz and stucco work by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer.
