Neues Castle Penig

The New Palace is a stately building at the head of the Palace Square. It is situated in front of the Old Palace and borders the Palace Square to the north. It was built in 1556/57 by Wolf I von Schönburg and renovated between 1787/90. The forced labor of the farmers for the palace renovation was the cause of unrest in the Penig area, which culminated in the Saxon Peasants' Uprising on August 30, 1790. It was built in the Neoclassical style without any decorative elements. Until 1852, it served as an administrative building and was bought by a paper factory in 1889. The rag sorting hall set up inside for paper production soon gave the house its name: "Rag Palace". Over time, the New Palace has been and continues to be used in various ways. In 1992, the facade of the palace was renovated. A few years ago, it was completely refurbished, and age-appropriate apartments were created.
