The New Castle Penig defines the castle square in Penig, located in the Mittelsachsen district. Originally built in the 16th century, it underwent a renovation linked to historical peasant unrest in the region.

History+

The construction of the New Castle took place between 1556 and 1557 under Wolf I von Schönburg. A renovation of the building occurred between 1787 and 1790. The forced labor demanded from peasants for this reconstruction led to unrest in the Penig area, culminating in the Saxon Peasant Uprising of August 30, 1790. The castle was designed in the Neoclassical style, devoid of decorative elements.
