At the foot of Rauenstein Castle, the New Rauenstein Castle is an edifice of the late Baroque era in Thuringia. Located in the municipality of Rauenstein in the Sonneberg district, it now houses a museum.

History+

The construction of the New Rauenstein Castle dates back to the years 1687 to 1690. During this period, Hans Siegmund von Schaumberg, who had regained full rights to the Rauenstein lordship in 1687, had the castle built. His attempts to sell the lands to Duke Albrecht of Saxe-Coburg failed due to opposition from the Ziegenfeld heirs. Following the construction of the new castle, the old Rauenstein Castle lost its significance and gradually fell into ruin.
