New Castle Stuttgart

The construction of the New Palace began in 1746 under Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg, who wished to move his residence from Ludwigsburg back to Stuttgart. After initial difficulties with financing, the foundation stone was laid, and Leopoldo Retti began construction work, which included the Corps de Logis and the garden wing. Following Retti's death in 1751, Philippe de La Guêpière took over and completed the central building and the shell of the city wing. A fire in 1762 destroyed the garden wing, and high costs led to a construction halt in 1774. Only after Carl Eugen's return to Stuttgart in 1775 were parts restored and the Marble Hall completed.
