History+
On the site of the current Neumünster, a memorial structure was likely erected as early as the 8th century to commemorate the martyrs Kilian, Kolonat, and Totnan. Bishop Burkard, the first Bishop of Würzburg, was laid to rest here, as was Bishop Megingaud later. Around 1057, Bishop Adalbero of Würzburg founded the collegiate church of Neumünster. During the secularization in Bavaria in 1803, the foundation became state property and temporarily served as an ammunition depot. From 1908, the Neumünster functioned as a Catholic parish church. Following severe damage during World War II and subsequent reconstruction, the church served as the bishop's church for the Diocese of Würzburg from 1950 until 1967.
