Newtown Castle
Newtown Castle, a striking 16th-century castle tower, stands on the northern edge of the Burren in County Clare, Ireland. Its unusual architecture, featuring a circular base with reinforced walls that widen downwards into a square pyramid, makes it a unique example of medieval defensive construction.
History+
Newtown Castle was originally built in the 16th century by the O'Briens clan. However, it soon passed into the possession of the O'Loghlens, one of the most influential Irish families in the region, also known as the “Princes of the Burren.” In 1641, Donogh O'Brian is recorded as the owner. Later, in 1839, Charles O'Loghlen was named as the owner, and the tower was described at that time as being “in good condition.” By the end of the 19th century, Peter O'Loghlen resided in the castle.
